Introduction
RO stands for Reverse Osmosis. An RO membrane is the core component that makes reverse osmosis possible; it's an artificial semipermeable membrane with specific properties, mimicking a biological semipermeable membrane. Because the pores of an RO membrane are one millionth the size of a human hair (0.0001 microns), they are invisible to the naked eye. Bacteria and viruses are 5000 times larger, so only water molecules and some mineral ions can pass through (the ions that pass through are not harmfully oriented). Other impurities and heavy metals are discharged through the wastewater pipe. Reverse osmosis membranes are of two types: asymmetric and homogeneous membranes. Currently used membrane materials are mainly cellulose acetate and aromatic polyamide. Components include hollow fiber, spiral wound, plate and frame, and tubular types. They can be used in separation, concentration, and purification unit operations in chemical engineering, mainly for pure water preparation, wastewater reuse, and seawater desalination projects.
